Touch monitor vs POS terminal — what's the difference?

A touch monitor is a display only — it has no internal computer and must connect to an existing PC, mini-PC, or POS terminal via HDMI, VGA, DisplayPort, or USB-C. It is the right choice when you already have a computer and need to add a touchscreen interface, when you are upgrading an existing counter setup, or when you want to use a separate high-performance PC with a dedicated display.

A POS terminal is a self-contained unit with the computer built in — it runs POS software directly without needing a separate PC. If you are building a new POS station from scratch and want a single unit, a terminal is usually the simpler choice. If you already have a computer or prefer to spec your own hardware, pair it with a touch monitor.

PCAP vs resistive touch — which technology do you need?

PCAP (Projected Capacitive) is the same touch technology used in smartphones and tablets. It supports multi-touch gestures (pinch, zoom, swipe), has a smooth glass surface that is easy to clean, and delivers a fast, responsive experience. PCAP is the standard technology for retail POS, hospitality, and kiosk environments. All Element, FEC, and most Elo monitors in our range use PCAP touch.

Resistive touch (used in the Elo AccuTouch range) responds to physical pressure rather than electrical capacitance. This means it works with gloved hands, styluses, and in environments where the operator cannot use bare fingers — making it suited to industrial, healthcare, or food processing environments. Resistive monitors typically have a single-touch interface and a slightly softer surface feel compared to PCAP glass.

Desktop touch monitors vs open-frame touch monitors

Desktop touch monitors come with a stand and full enclosure — they sit on a counter or desk and connect to a computer behind the counter. These are the standard choice for retail checkout counters, hospitality ordering stations, and reception desks. Key models include the Element TEM-22 (21.5", HDMI/VGA), Element TSM-19 (19", HDMI/VGA), FEC LD-9022W (22" PCAP), and FEC XM-3015 (15" PCAP with stand).

Open-frame touch monitors have no external enclosure — they are bare panel-and-frame assemblies designed to be integrated inside a custom kiosk cabinet, countertop cutout, or purpose-built enclosure. They are the standard choice for self-service kiosks, gaming terminals, ATMs, and any application where the screen needs to be flush-mounted into a custom housing. Key open-frame models include the FEC AerMonitor AM-1022 (22" PCAP, bezel-free), MicroTouch OF-150P-B1 (15" PCAP, VGA/HDMI/DP), and Elo 1598L (15.6" AccuTouch, open-frame).

Which brands do we stock?

Element is our most complete touch monitor range, covering standard desktop monitors (TSM-19 at 19", TEM-22 at 21.5"), a 24" medical-grade DICOM display (M24-HC), and a 55" 4K large-format interactive screen (M55). Element monitors offer strong value for retail and healthcare at competitive price points.

FEC produces commercial-grade PCAP touch monitors widely used in Australian POS and kiosk environments. The FEC AerMonitor AM-1022 is a 22" bezel-free open-frame monitor at $789 — popular for counter-embedded kiosk builds. The FEC LD-9022W is a 22" desktop PCAP monitor with stand, and the FEC XM-3015 is a 15" PCAP desktop with stand and power supply included. FEC also supplies an 8" CDU (Customer Display Unit) designed specifically for the FEC AerLite POS terminal.

Elo is a globally recognised brand in professional touch displays. The Elo 1598L is a 15.6" open-frame LCD with AccuTouch resistive technology — suited to environments where gloved operation or stylus use is required. The Elo 1002L is a compact 10.1" PCAP desktop monitor with VGA, HDMI, and USB-C connectivity, popular for secondary customer-facing displays and compact counter applications.

MicroTouch specialises in open-frame PCAP displays for kiosk and custom integration. The MicroTouch OF-150P-B1 is a 15" open-frame with VGA, HDMI, and DisplayPort outputs — flexible connectivity for integration into a wide range of host systems.

Element M24-HC is a purpose-built 24" medical touch monitor with DICOM compliance, white clinical finish, and HDMI/DisplayPort/DVI connectivity — designed for healthcare clinical review environments. See our Healthcare range for more medical-grade display and input device options.

Frequently asked questions — touch screen monitors

Q: Will a touch monitor work with my existing Windows PC?
A: Yes. All touch monitors in our range connect to a Windows PC via a standard video cable (HDMI, VGA, or DisplayPort) for the display, plus a USB cable for the touch function. Windows 10 and Windows 11 recognise touch input natively — no additional drivers are needed for basic touch operation. Some models include value-added drivers for multi-touch gestures or on-screen display adjustment.

Q: What is an open-frame touch monitor used for?
A: Open-frame monitors are designed for integration into custom enclosures — self-service kiosks, gaming cabinets, ATMs, countertop cutouts, and purpose-built POS housings. They have no external casing, so they can be mounted flush inside a cabinet with only the glass surface visible. If you are building a kiosk or need a screen integrated into a bespoke counter, open-frame is the right choice. For standard counter use, choose a desktop monitor with stand.

Q: Can touch monitors be used as a customer-facing display?
A: Yes. A secondary touch monitor (or non-touch display) can be connected to a POS terminal or PC as a customer-facing screen — showing the order total, item list, or promotional content to the customer while the operator uses a separate screen. The FEC CDU 8" is purpose-built for this use on FEC AerLite terminals. For other setups, a compact 10" or 15" monitor mounted on the customer side of the counter works well.

Q: What connectivity do touch monitors support?
A: Video inputs vary by model — most support HDMI and VGA as standard, with some models adding DisplayPort or USB-C. Touch input is via USB on all models. HDMI is recommended for modern PCs and POS terminals. VGA is available for legacy systems. Check the individual product specifications for the exact connectivity of each model, as this varies across the range.

Q: Do you supply touch monitors for healthcare and clinical environments?
A: Yes. The Element M24-HC is a 24" DICOM-compliant medical touch monitor designed for clinical review in hospitals, radiology departments, and specialist clinics. It features a white clinical finish, HDMI/DP/DVI inputs, and meets healthcare display standards. For a complete range of medical-grade input devices, see our Healthcare category.

Q: Do you accept purchase orders from government and healthcare organisations?
A: Yes. We accept purchase orders from Australian government departments, hospitals, schools, universities, and councils. Contact us on 1300 115 808 or email sales@posplaza.com.au for procurement support and volume pricing.
