Bluetooth Barcode Scanners: Wireless 1D & 2D for Retail, Warehouse & Mobile POS
Bluetooth barcode scanners connect to your POS, tablet, phone or PC wirelessly, so staff can scan anywhere in the store, stockroom or warehouse without being tethered to a cable. They read both 1D (linear) and 2D barcodes, including QR Codes, PDF417 and barcodes shown on a phone screen, and send each scan straight into your point-of-sale or inventory software. POS Plaza stocks a wide range, from compact pocket scanners to rugged long-range units, with brands including Zebra, Datalogic, Honeywell, Socket Mobile, CipherLab, KOAMTAC, Opticon, NEXA and Element, starting from $219.
1D or 2D: which scanner do you need?
1D (linear) scanners read the standard barcodes printed on retail products and shelf labels. They are fast, affordable, and ideal if you only ever scan conventional printed barcodes.
2D (imager) scanners read everything a 1D scanner does, plus QR Codes, PDF417, Data Matrix and barcodes displayed on a customer's phone, such as loyalty cards, e-tickets and mobile vouchers. If you accept mobile coupons or scan from screens, choose 2D. Most modern retail and warehouse setups now use 2D imagers.
How to choose a Bluetooth barcode scanner
- Scan range: standard-range scanners are made for arm's-length scanning at the counter. For warehouse racking, pallets and back-of-store, choose an extended or long-range model such as the Zebra DS3678-ER or Datalogic PowerScan.
- Ruggedness: drop-rated and IP-rated rugged scanners (Zebra DS3678, Datalogic PowerScan) withstand industrial and outdoor use, while lightweight pocket and handheld units suit retail counters, markets and hospitality.
- Charging and cradle: many scanners are sold as kits with a charging cradle or dock to keep batteries topped up. For all-day shifts, look for a model with a removable battery.
- Form factor: as well as standard handhelds, we stock pocket scanners, ring scanners (Urovo SR5600) and phone-attached SmartSled units (KOAMTAC) for hands-free or all-in-one mobile scanning.
- Compatibility: Bluetooth scanners pair with Windows, Android and Apple iOS/iPadOS. Socket Mobile and CipherLab have particularly strong Apple support for iPad-based POS.

Frequently asked questions: Bluetooth barcode scanners
Q: Do Bluetooth barcode scanners work with iPad and iPhone?
A: Yes. Many models, including Socket Mobile, CipherLab and Zebra, support Apple iOS and iPadOS over Bluetooth, so they pair directly with an iPad or iPhone POS app. Socket Mobile in particular is widely used for Apple-based point of sale.
Q: Should I choose a 1D or 2D scanner?
A: A 2D imager reads everything a 1D scanner does, plus QR Codes, PDF417 and barcodes shown on a phone screen. Choose 2D unless you only ever scan standard printed retail barcodes, in which case a 1D scanner is a more economical option.
Q: How far can a Bluetooth scanner work from its base?
A: Bluetooth range is typically up to around 10 metres line-of-sight, and further on some industrial models. Most scanners also store scans in memory if you move out of range and upload them automatically once reconnected.
Q: Does the scanner come with a charging cradle?
A: Many are sold as kits that include a charging cradle or dock. Each product listing states exactly what is in the box, so you can choose a complete, ready-to-go bundle.
Q: Will a Bluetooth scanner work with my POS software?
A: Most Bluetooth scanners pair as a wireless keyboard (HID mode) and work with any POS that accepts keyboard input, including Lightspeed, Square, Vend and Retail Express. Some also offer SPP or SDK modes for deeper integration. Not sure which model suits your system? Call our experts on 1300 115 808.
Q: How long does the battery last?
A: Battery life varies by model, but most cordless scanners handle a full shift on a single charge, and many support thousands of scans per charge. For continuous use, choose a model with a removable battery or keep the charging cradle on the counter.
