This guide explains Honeywell's scanner series and how to choose the right model for retail, warehouse, hands-free and healthcare use. If you already know the model you need, you will find it below; if not, tell us your application and we will match you to the right scanner.
Understanding Honeywell's scanner series
- Voyager: everyday retail handheld scanners (1D laser and 2D area imagers), corded and cordless, such as the Voyager 1250g, 1400g, 1470g and cordless 1602g.
- Xenon / Xenon XP: premium 2D area imagers (1950g, 1952g) that read poor-quality, damaged and on-screen barcodes, with cordless and healthcare versions.
- Genesis: compact vertical presentation scanners (7580g, 7680g) for hands-free counter scanning in a small footprint.
- Orbit: on-counter omnidirectional hands-free scanners (7120, 7190g, HF6802D) ideal for retail and hospitality counters.
- Granit: ultra-rugged industrial scanners (1910i, 1920i DPM, 1990i, 1991i) for warehouses, manufacturing and cold storage, including extended-range and direct-part-mark options.
- Ring scanners (8670 / 8675i): wearable scanners for hands-free warehouse picking and packing.
1D or 2D: which Honeywell scanner do you need?
1D scanners (such as the Voyager 1250g laser) read the standard linear barcodes printed on retail products. They are fast, affordable and ideal if you only scan conventional printed barcodes.
2D scanners (the Xenon, and 2D Voyager, Genesis and Orbit models) read everything a 1D scanner does, plus QR Codes, PDF417, Data Matrix and barcodes shown on a customer's phone, such as loyalty cards, e-tickets and mobile vouchers. If you accept mobile coupons or scan from screens, choose 2D. Most modern setups now use 2D imagers.
Corded or cordless (Bluetooth)?
Corded scanners plug straight into your POS or PC and never need charging, perfect for a fixed counter. Cordless / Bluetooth scanners (Voyager 1472g, Xenon 1952g, Granit 1991i, the pocketable Voyager 1602g) let staff scan away from the till, around bulky items and down the aisle, returning to a charging cradle between scans. Choose cordless for mobility, larger items and stocktakes.
Standard retail or rugged industrial?
Standard scanners (Voyager, Xenon) are built for retail counters, offices and light commercial use. Rugged Granit scanners are drop-rated and sealed against dust and water for warehouses, manufacturing and cold storage, with extended-range models for reading barcodes metres away and direct-part-mark (DPM) models for marks etched into metal and components.

Frequently asked questions: Honeywell barcode scanners
Q: What is the difference between Honeywell Voyager and Xenon scanners?
A: Voyager is Honeywell's everyday retail range, available as 1D laser and 2D models at a lower price point. Xenon is the premium 2D area-imager range, with faster scanning and better performance on damaged, low-quality and on-screen barcodes. Choose Voyager for general retail and Xenon for demanding or high-volume scanning.
Q: Which Honeywell scanner is best for a retail shop?
A: For a fixed counter, the Voyager 1250g (1D) or Voyager 1470g / Xenon 1950g (2D) are popular, reliable choices. For hands-free scanning where staff present items to the scanner, choose an Orbit or Genesis presentation scanner. Pick a 2D model if you scan loyalty cards or coupons from phone screens.
Q: What is a Honeywell Granit scanner used for?
A: Granit is Honeywell's ultra-rugged industrial range, built for warehouses, manufacturing and cold storage. The scanners are drop-rated and sealed against dust and water, and come in extended-range versions for high racking and DPM versions for direct-part-mark codes on metal and components.
Q: What is a presentation (hands-free) scanner?
A: A presentation scanner sits on the counter and reads barcodes the moment an item is presented to it, so staff keep both hands free. Honeywell's Orbit and Genesis ranges are presentation scanners, ideal for busy retail and hospitality counters.
Q: Do Honeywell scanners work with my POS software?
A: Yes. Most Honeywell scanners connect as a USB or Bluetooth keyboard (HID) and work with any POS that accepts keyboard input, including Lightspeed, Square, Vend and Retail Express. Cordless models pair with Windows, Android and Apple iOS/iPadOS. Not sure which suits your system? Call our experts on 1300 115 808.
Q: Do Honeywell cordless scanners come with a charging cradle?
A: Many are sold as kits that include a charging cradle or base. Each listing states exactly what is in the box, so you can choose a complete, ready-to-use bundle, and "scan only" options are available where you already have a cradle.
Q: Does Honeywell make healthcare scanners?
A: Yes. The Xenon 1950h and 1952h healthcare models have disinfectant-ready housings that withstand repeated cleaning with hospital-grade wipes, making them suitable for clinical and patient-care environments.
