The S680 is Cino's presentation scanner, which means it sits on the counter facing the customer and reads whatever passes in front of it. Nobody picks it up and nobody pulls a trigger. Behind the window is a 1280 x 800 pixel sensor running Cino's FuzzyScan imaging platform, with a 56 by 37 degree field of view that gives the scanner a deliberately large catching area, and a proximity sensor that brings the illumination up as an item approaches rather than leaving it blazing all day.
The numbers that matter on a counter are motion tolerance and first pass read rate. The S680 is rated to 617 cm per second, which is faster than anyone can swipe a tin of tomatoes past it, and it decodes at a full 360 degrees of roll, so the item does not have to be turned the right way up. It reads down to 3 mil on Code 39 and 5 mil on Data Matrix, handles dense, damaged, overwrapped and poorly printed codes, and reads from phone screens at low brightness. Sold and supported in Australia by POS PLAZA on 1300 115 808.
Why the S680 moves a queue
Swipe and go
Omni directional decoding at 360 degrees of roll means the item never has to be aligned. The operator passes it across the window in whatever orientation it came out of the basket and the read lands.
A big catching area
The 56 by 37 degree field of view gives a wide scanning field close to the glass, which is what makes the scanner forgiving for an inexperienced user or a customer at a self service lane.
Wakes as the item arrives
A built in proximity sensor fires the illumination when something comes near, rather than running a bright LED continuously in front of a customer for eight hours.
Reads a dim phone
Cino specifies the S680 for electronic barcodes shown at low screen brightness, which is the common failure point with vouchers and loyalty passes on a customer's handset.
Pick it up when you need to
Lift the scanner off the base and press the trigger and it works as a handheld, which covers the bulky item that will not fit across the window.
Heard across a noisy shop
The speaker is programmable for tone, volume and duration, and the multi colour indicators sit on the top face where the operator can see them, not on the back.
Where it fits
Retail counters
The classic use. The scanner sits beside the till facing the customer, the operator works two handed, and a queue of small items clears faster than it would with a handheld.
Self checkout and price checking
Pass through scanning and a large field of view are exactly what an untrained shopper needs, and the mounting options let the same unit go into a kiosk or onto a price check post.
Hospitality and pharmacy
A compact 90 mm footprint suits a crowded bench, and 3 mil precision covers the dense codes on pharmaceutical packaging and small cosmetics.
The stand is also the mount
The S680 ships on an adjustable stand that tilts through 135 degrees, from 45 degrees forward to 90 degrees back. That range sounds excessive until you try to scan the underside of a large box on a low counter, at which point the scanner simply tips back and keeps reading.
Cino also designed the stand to work as the mounting bracket, so the same unit goes on a wall, under a bench, onto the side of a host machine or inside a kiosk without buying an additional kit. An optional magnet kit pins the base to the counter firmly while still letting an operator lift the scanner for handheld use.

Before you order
Measure the counter
The footprint is 90 mm square and the scanner stands 148.5 mm tall on its base. That is small for a presentation unit, but it still wants a clear space facing the customer rather than a corner behind the eftpos terminal.
Decide about EAS now
Cino builds an optional model that deactivates Checkpoint electronic article surveillance tags as it scans. It is a different part number, so tell us before you order if you run Checkpoint.
Think about mounting
Wall, under counter, host machine and kiosk mounting all use the standard stand. Ask us about the affixing magnet kit if the unit needs to stay put on an open counter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it need a driver?
No. In its standard USB configuration the S680 behaves as a keyboard and types the decoded barcode into whatever field has focus, so it works with any till software without installing anything. USB VCOM and RS232 are there for software that expects a serial port instead.
Can the operator still pick it up?
Yes. The body lifts off the base and has a trigger, so an item too big to pass across the window is scanned in the hand. That is the practical difference between this and a fixed in bench scanner.
How does it compare to the A670 handheld?
Different working style rather than better or worse. A presentation scanner is faster where items come to the counter and the operator wants both hands free. A handheld is better where the operator goes to the stock. The S680 covers the handheld case in a pinch, which a fixed scanner cannot.
Will it read a code on a customer's phone?
Yes, including on a dim screen, which Cino calls out specifically in the S680 datasheet. Digital coupons, gift certificates, boarding passes and loyalty codes all read without asking the customer to turn their brightness up.
How small a barcode can it read?
Down to 3 mil on Code 39 and 5 mil on Data Matrix. A mil is a thousandth of an inch measured across the narrowest bar, so 3 mil covers the dense codes on pharmacy packs and small cosmetics.
Is the illumination uncomfortable for customers?
The proximity sensor is there for that reason. Illumination comes up when an item approaches rather than running continuously, which matters when the scanner faces someone standing at the counter all day.
Can we standardise the configuration across several units?
Yes. Cino's iCode puts an entire configuration into one printed barcode, so a new or replacement unit is set up with a single scan. DataWizard Premium then reshapes the output where your software wants the data in a particular format.
What warranty does it carry?
A 24 Months Return to Base term. Return to base means the unit comes back to us for assessment and repair or replacement, handled in Australia rather than through an overseas returns process.
