Between a Bluetooth cordless scanner and a full Android mobile computer there is a gap, and the F790WD is built to sit in it. A Bluetooth scanner is tied to the one host it paired with and reaches perhaps a hundred metres from its cradle. A mobile computer runs applications, costs several times as much and has to be managed like a phone. The F790WD joins your existing Wi-Fi network like any other device, works anywhere that network reaches, and still behaves like a scanner rather than something that needs an IT policy.
It carries a two inch QVGA colour display, two function keys and a five way navigation pad, which is what lets it show a form, confirm a transmission or let an operator type a code that will not scan. Behind the window is Cino's linear imaging engine with a bright aiming line, reading beyond 24 inches on a retail barcode at up to 500 scans per second. The body weighs 211 grams with its battery, survives multiple 1.8 metre drops to concrete and is sealed to IP42. Sold and supported in Australia by POS PLAZA on 1300 115 808.
What the Wi-Fi buys you
Range measured in sites, not desks
More than 150 metres in open space from each access point, and the scanner roams between access points on the same network, so coverage is whatever your Wi-Fi already covers.
No host to be tied to
The scanner talks to a network rather than to one paired computer, so the same unit works from the receiving dock, the office and the back of the warehouse without being re-paired.
It keeps working offline
BATCH mode writes reads to the scanner's own memory when there is no network, which turns a Wi-Fi scanner into a data collector for the parts of a site the signal never reached.
A screen that answers questions
The colour display shows whether a read was accepted, what the host sent back and which field is being filled, which is the difference between a scanner and a device an operator can actually work from.
Type what will not scan
A virtual keyboard on the display lets the operator enter a damaged or missing barcode by hand at the point of work rather than writing it on paper for later.
Enterprise security
WEP, WPA and WPA2, so the scanner joins a properly secured corporate network rather than needing an open one of its own.
Where it fits
Warehouses and distribution
Picking, receiving and despatch across a floor that one Bluetooth cradle could never cover, with the data landing in the host as it happens.
Stocktakes
BATCH mode across the whole site, then a single transmission at the end. No network dependency in the aisles and nothing to transcribe afterwards.
Workshops and yards
Where the host computer is in an office and the work is not, and where a 1.8 metre drop rating matters more than a thin case.
Against the alternatives
Compared with a Bluetooth cordless scanner, the F790WD trades a simple cradle for network configuration, and gets site wide coverage, roaming and a screen in return. If the work happens within sight of one till, Bluetooth is the simpler answer and we will say so.
Compared with an Android mobile computer, it gives up running applications, a touch screen and a camera, and costs a fraction of the price. Where the job is scanning into an existing host system rather than running software in the hand, that is a trade worth making, and it removes an entire class of device management from the project.

Before you order
Count the docks, not the scanners
Every unit ships with its own charging dock, battery, cable and power supply, so a four scanner order arrives as four complete kits. Tell us if you would rather have fewer docks and we will quote it that way.
Check your wireless coverage
The scanner is only as good as the network it joins. Range figures are for open space, and racking, concrete and cool rooms all take a bite out of them. Describe the site and we will be straight with you.
Decide on the operating mode
ONLINE for live transmission, BATCH for collection without a network, STERM for two way interaction with the host. The choice changes how the scanner is set up before it ships.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it need its own base station?
No, and that is the main difference from a Bluetooth scanner. It joins the wireless network you already run, the same way a laptop or a tablet does, so coverage comes from your existing access points rather than from a cradle on a desk.
What happens when it leaves Wi-Fi coverage?
It depends on the mode. In BATCH mode the scanner stores reads in its own memory and they are transmitted later, so losing the network costs nothing. ONLINE mode needs the connection, because its whole point is live transmission with host acknowledgement.
Can it move between access points?
Yes. The scanner performs a fast site survey when the signal from its current access point drops, then reconnects to a better one on the same SSID and security. That is what makes it usable across a large building.
What does the display do?
It shows the scanner status, the data being captured, which field of a form is being filled and anything the host sends back in STERM mode. With the two function keys and the navigation pad it also gives the operator a virtual keyboard for entering a barcode that will not read.
How long does the battery last?
Cino specifies a 3.7V 2600 mAh lithium ion pack with a four to five hour charge time. Runtime depends on how hard the radio works, since a scanner transmitting live all day draws more than one collecting a batch.
Does it read 2D codes or QR?
No. The F790WD is a linear imager. It reads the mainstream 1D symbologies plus stacked linear codes such as PDF417, Micro PDF417 and Codablock F. For QR or Data Matrix you want a 2D imager, and we can point you at one.
How tough is it?
Multiple drops from 1.8 metres onto concrete and IP42 sealing. That is a warehouse and workshop rating rather than a washdown one, and it is well ahead of a counter scanner.
What warranty does it carry?
A 36 Months Return to Base term, with batteries excluded. A rechargeable cell is consumed by its charge cycles rather than failing, which is the standard position across the industry. Return to base means the unit comes back to us for assessment and repair or replacement.
