With direct thermal there is one consumable and one line on the reorder sheet. The coating on the label face carries the image chemistry, the printhead develops it, and nothing else is used up, which keeps the running cost of a busy despatch bench low and the printer close to maintenance free. In exchange the print is not permanent. Sustained warmth, direct sun and repeated rubbing will all soften a direct thermal image over time, so labels that need to stay legible for years should be printed on thermal transfer stock with a ribbon.
Blue is the quiet colour in a coding system: it carries information rather than urgency. It commonly marks internal movements that are not customer orders, stock transfers between sites, returns being booked back in, and paperwork copies filed against a consignment. In food and pharmacy operations it also marks chilled and refrigerated lines, keeping cold-chain stock visually separate from ambient goods on a shared bench.
