Cino FM-480 fixed mount linear barcode scanner, angled view showing the front scan window, the status indicator panel and the cable leaving the rear of the housing

The FM-480 is not a scanner anyone holds. It is a module you mount: 47.6 by 40.6 by 23.1 millimetres, 95 grams, with two M3 threaded holes in the housing and a USB cable coming out of the back. It goes inside a self service kiosk, under the lip of a bench, beside a conveyor, into a parcel locker or onto a test rig, and then it stays there and reads whatever is put in front of it.

Behind the window is Cino's linear imaging engine with a 630 nm red LED, running a dynamic scan rate up to 500 scans per second and reading bi-directionally. It decodes the full mainstream 1D set plus stacked linear codes including PDF417, Micro PDF417, Codablock F and GS1 DataBar Stacked. Minimum resolution is typically 3 mil on Code 39 with more than three inches of depth of field at that size, and range extends to 24 inches on a retail UPC/EAN and 34 inches on a 20 mil Code 39. The housing is sealed to IP54 and rated for drops from 1.5 metres. Sold and supported in Australia by POS PLAZA on 1300 115 808.

What makes it an integration part

Small enough to hide

At 23.1 mm deep it fits behind a panel or under a counter lip where a desktop scanner simply will not go, which is usually what decides the design.

Mounts with two screws

Two M3 threaded holes at 4 mm depth, not a bracket, not a clamp and not adhesive. Drill the panel, bolt it on, align it once.

Front or side window

This part number has the front facing window. Cino builds a side window version of the same module, which matters when the cable has to leave in a particular direction.

Sealed to IP54

Dust protected and resistant to splashing water, which is a meaningful step above the IP52 rating typical of counter scanners and suits food preparation, workshops and outdoor kiosks.

Reads at a distance

Up to 34 inches on a 20 mil Code 39 means the module can sit well back from the read point, behind glass or above a conveyor, rather than being crowded against it.

Tells the host what happened

Separate OK and NG signals let the surrounding machine respond to a good read or a failed one without parsing the data stream.

Where it ends up

Kiosks and self service

Behind the window of a ticketing, ordering or check in terminal, where the scanner must be invisible, fixed and incapable of being walked off with.

Benches and production lines

Mounted above or beside a line reading labels as they pass, with the depth of field to sit clear of the moving parts.

Lockers, cabinets and access points

Parcel lockers, tool cribs and controlled access doors where a code is presented to a fixed window and the machine decides what happens next.

Commissioning it on site

Front face of the Cino FM-480 fixed mount scanner showing the POWER, STATUS and OK/NG indicator labels beside the test button

The front face carries three indicators labelled POWER, STATUS and OK/NG, plus a test button, and that combination is what makes a fixed scanner installable by one person. Press the button and the module enters test mode, scanning repeatedly and reporting the ratio of successful reads.

That ratio is how you find the right position. Move the module or the target, run the test again, compare the numbers. It turns aligning a hidden scanner from guesswork into a measurement, which is worth more on an install day than any specification line.

What is in the box

  • Cino FM-480 fixed mount linear scanner, front window, USB
  • Attached USB interface cable
  • Quick start guide

Before you order

Check what you are reading

This is a linear imager. It reads 1D barcodes and stacked codes such as PDF417, and it does not read QR or Data Matrix. If your application involves QR codes or phone screens, ask us about the FA-480 instead.

Plan the mounting first

Two M3 holes at 4 mm depth, a 47.6 by 40.6 mm face and 23.1 mm of depth. Settle the panel cut out and the cable exit before the order, because the window side is fixed by the part number.

Mind the read distance

Range depends on the size of the code. Tell us the barcode and the distance you need and we will confirm the module will reach it, rather than leaving you to find out at installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it read QR codes?

No. The FM-480 uses a linear imaging engine, which reads 1D barcodes and stacked linear codes such as PDF417, Micro PDF417, Codablock F and GS1 DataBar Stacked. QR Code and Data Matrix need an area imager, and the Cino FA-480 covers that.

How far away can it read?

Up to 24 inches on a standard retail UPC or EAN barcode and up to 34 inches on a larger 20 mil Code 39. At the small end it reads down to 3 mil with more than three inches of depth of field, so there is room for the target to move.

How is it mounted?

Two threaded M3 holes in the housing, 4 mm deep. You bolt it to a panel, a bracket or a frame of your own. There is no stand and no clamp, because it is meant to become part of a machine rather than sit on a desk.

Can the host trigger a read?

Yes. Alongside the five operating modes there is an external trigger input and a serial trigger command you define yourself, so your software can tell the scanner exactly when to look.

What are the OK and NG signals for?

They report a successful or failed read as signals rather than as data, so the surrounding machine can stop a line, open a door or light a lamp without having to interpret the barcode itself.

How do I know it is pointed correctly?

Press the test button. The module scans repeatedly and reports the proportion of successful reads, so you can compare positions and settle on the best one by measurement rather than by eye.

Will it survive a wash down area?

It is sealed to IP54, which covers dust and splashing water from any direction. That suits food preparation and workshop environments. It is not rated for pressure washing or immersion.

What warranty does it carry?

A 24 Months Return to Base term. Return to base means the module comes back to us for assessment and repair or replacement, handled in Australia.

Summary

The Cino FM-480 is a fixed mount linear imaging barcode scanner measuring 47.6 by 40.6 by 23.1 mm and weighing 95 grams on the USB version, designed to be bolted into a kiosk, bench, locker or production line through two M3 threaded holes. It uses a 630 nm visible red LED and a linear imaging engine with a dynamic scan rate up to 500 scans per second, reading bi-directionally at up to 24 inches on a 100 percent UPC or EAN symbol and up to 34 inches on a 20 mil Code 39, down to a typical 3 mil minimum resolution with more than three inches of depth of field. It decodes the mainstream 1D symbologies together with stacked linear codes including PDF417, Micro PDF417, Codablock F and GS1 DataBar Stacked, and does not decode Data Matrix or QR. Five operating modes are available, together with an external trigger, a user definable serial trigger command and OK and NG output signals for reading control. The housing is sealed to IP54, survives drops from 1.5 metres to concrete and operates from -10 C to 50 C with ambient light immunity to 100,000 lux. This part number carries the front scan window and the USB interface. Covered by a 24 Months Return to Base warranty. Sold in Australia by POS PLAZA, 1300 115 808.
