Nexa BL-8080 black desktop 2D barcode scanner on its presentation stand

The Nexa BL-8080 is a black USB desktop 2D barcode scanner: a hands-free presentation unit that sits on the counter and reads whatever is held up to it. It handles ordinary 1D retail barcodes, 2D codes such as QR, and codes displayed on a phone or tablet screen.

It is the fifth generation of Nexa's BL-80x0 desktop series, a line that has been refined across successive revisions rather than redesigned each time, and it connects over USB as a plug-and-play keyboard so there is no driver to install and no POS integration work.

It replaces the Nexa BL-8060 and BL-8070, both now discontinued, and is the direct upgrade path for either. Nexa backs it with a 36 month replacement warranty, which is a step beyond the usual return-to-base repair cover on comparable scanners.

Why choose the Nexa BL-8080

Reads phone screens
A 2D imager, so QR and barcodes on a customer's phone scan as easily as printed ones.
1D and 2D in one
Ordinary retail barcodes plus QR, from the same window, with no mode to switch.
Hands free
Sits on its own stand and reads what is presented, keeping both hands on the sale.
Plug and play USB
Presents as a keyboard, so it types into any POS field with no driver to install.
36 month replacement
Swapped out rather than sent away for repair, so the counter is never left short.
Fifth generation
The latest revision of Nexa's long-running BL-80x0 desktop scanner line.

How the BL-8080 compares

Compared against the other hands-free 2D presentation scanners we stock from Zebra, Honeywell and Datalogic. All four read 1D, 2D and phone screens, so the differences are interfaces, ruggedness, price and how the warranty is serviced. Figures below are taken from each product's own listing.

The BL-8080 is not the cheapest of the four and its warranty is not the longest, since all four carry 36 months. What separates it is that its cover is replacement rather than return to base. Choose the Zebra for extra host interfaces and a drop rating, the Datalogic for Digimarc and footprint, the Honeywell on price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the BL-8080 read QR codes and phone screens?

Yes to both. It uses a 2D imager rather than a laser, so it reads ordinary 1D barcodes, 2D codes such as QR, and it reads them straight off a phone or tablet display. That covers digital vouchers, loyalty and membership codes in a wallet app, e-tickets, and click-and-collect pick-up codes. A laser scanner cannot read a screen at all.

Is it hands free?

Yes. It is a desktop presentation scanner that sits on its own stand, so staff present the item to the scanner rather than picking up a handheld and aiming it. On a counter where goods are passed across a bench, that removes a step from every transaction.

What is the warranty, and how does it differ from the others?

Nexa covers the BL-8080 for 36 months on a replacement basis. The distinction matters: the comparable Honeywell, Datalogic and Zebra presentation scanners we stock also carry 36 month cover, but theirs is return to base, meaning the unit is sent away and repaired. A replacement warranty swaps the unit instead, so a failure does not leave the counter without a scanner while a repair is turned around.

How does it compare with the Zebra DS9308, Honeywell Orbit or Datalogic Magellan?

All four are hands-free 2D presentation scanners that read 1D, 2D and phone screens, so for everyday retail scanning they do the same job. The Zebra DS9308 adds RS232, keyboard wedge and IBM 46XX interfaces plus a 1.5m drop rating, which suits harder environments and older host systems. The Datalogic Magellan 1500i adds Digimarc and a very compact footprint. The Honeywell Orbit HF6802D is the closest on price. The Nexa is the value pick with the replacement warranty; the others are the pick if you need their specific interfaces or ruggedness.

Does the BL-8080 replace the BL-8060 or BL-8070?

Yes. The BL-8080 supersedes both the Nexa BL-8060 and the BL-8070, which are now discontinued, and it is the direct replacement for either. It is the same desktop presentation format doing the same job, so it drops onto the counter in place of an older unit and connects the same way, over USB as a keyboard wedge with no driver. Because it presents as a keyboard, your POS does not need reconfiguring: it will read the new scanner exactly as it read the old one. It is also cheaper than either model it replaces and carries a longer 36 month replacement warranty where those carried 24 months return to base.

Will it work with my POS software?

Almost certainly, without a driver. It presents to the computer as a USB keyboard, so a scanned barcode arrives exactly as if it had been typed. Any POS, spreadsheet or web form with a cursor in a field accepts it. If you need a suffix character or a particular symbology enabled, that is set by scanning configuration barcodes from the manual.

What businesses is it suited to?

Counter-based retail where items are presented rather than carried around: pharmacies, bottle shops, convenience stores, newsagents, specialty retail and service counters. It is a particularly good fit anywhere customers routinely hold up a code on a phone.

Are the full technical specifications available?

Nexa has not yet published a detailed specification sheet for the BL-8080. Rather than reprint the previous model's figures, this page lists only what Nexa and the Australian distributor confirm for the BL-8080 itself. If you need scan rate, decode range or sensor detail before ordering, call us on 1300 115 808 and we will request them from Nexa.

What is in the box?

The scanner on its desktop stand, a USB cable and a quick start guide. Nothing further is needed: the USB connection carries both data and power, so there is no separate power supply to find room for.
