The Zebra DS8208-SR is a corded handheld 2D barcode scanner built for high-volume, demanding scanning. It reads 1D and 2D barcodes, including damaged, dirty and poorly printed labels and codes shown on a phone screen, and connects to your POS or PC over USB.

Part number DS8208-SR4U2104ZVW. This is the USB kit: scanner plus USB cable, in black. It is the premium tier of Zebra's general-purpose handheld range, with a 2 megapixel sensor, a 1.8m drop rating and best-in-class motion tolerance for operators who scan all day.

Why the DS8208 rather than an entry-level scanner

  • 2 megapixel sensor (1600 x 1200). Far more image data than a typical entry-level imager, which is what lets it decode damaged, scuffed, low-contrast and poorly printed barcodes on the first pass.
  • Extreme motion tolerance: up to 406cm per second on a 13 mil UPC. Staff can swipe items through at speed rather than pausing to aim, which is where the time saving comes from on a busy counter.
  • Long working range: reads a 13 mil UPC from 0.5cm right out to 69.9cm, so operators can scan a bulky or awkward item without lifting it.
  • Rugged: designed for 54 drops onto concrete from 1.8m and 2,000 tumbles, with an IP52 seal against dust and splashes.
  • Host powered over USB, no separate power supply to find a socket for.
  • Three year warranty, which is unusually long for a handheld scanner.

What's in the box

  • Zebra DS8208-SR handheld scanner, black
  • USB cable

Note that this kit does not include a stand. If you want hands-free presentation scanning, the DS8208 gooseneck Intellistand is an optional accessory and we can quote it with the scanner.

How it compares

Both are corded Zebra 2D handheld scanners that plug into USB and work out of the box. The difference is how hard they are being asked to work.

ScannerTierChoose it when
Zebra DS8208-SR (this scanner)PremiumHigh scan volume all day, damaged or poorly printed barcodes, a rough environment, or you want the 1.8m drop rating and 3 year warranty
Zebra DS2208-SR kit with standEntry levelOrdinary retail and hospitality counters with clean, well-printed barcodes and moderate volume. Includes a stand for hands-free scanning

For most small retail counters the DS2208 is the sensible buy. Step up to the DS8208 when scanning is constant, when the barcodes themselves are the problem, or when a dropped scanner would stop the line.

Where it is used

  • High-volume retail checkouts where scan speed directly sets queue length
  • Warehouses and dispatch reading labels that have been scuffed, wrapped or handled
  • Manufacturing and workshops where a scanner gets dropped onto a hard floor
  • Pharmacy and healthcare reading small, dense 2D codes on packaging
  • Anywhere customers present phone screens, for loyalty cards, vouchers and digital tickets

Frequently asked questions

Does the DS8208 need drivers or special software?
Usually not. Out of the box it behaves as a USB HID keyboard, so barcodes appear wherever the cursor is and it works with almost any POS or PC without installing anything. If your software needs a different mode, such as USB COM or RS232 emulation, you reconfigure the scanner by scanning the setup barcodes in Zebra's guide.
Can it read barcodes off a phone or tablet screen?
Yes. It is an imager rather than a laser, so it reads 1D and 2D codes displayed on phone and tablet screens as well as printed labels. That covers loyalty cards, e-vouchers, digital tickets and QR-based payments.
Does this kit include a stand?
No. This part number is the scanner and USB cable only. A gooseneck Intellistand is available separately if you want the scanner to sit upright for hands-free presentation scanning. Ask us to quote it with the scanner and we will supply them together.
What is the difference between the DS8208 and the cordless DS8278?
They share the same scan engine and performance. The DS8208 is the corded model, powered over its USB cable, which makes it simpler and cheaper with nothing to charge. The DS8278 is the cordless Bluetooth version with a battery and charging cradle, for operators who need to walk to the item rather than bring the item to the scanner. This listing is the corded DS8208.
What does the SR in DS8208-SR mean?
Standard Range, which is the right choice for counter and bench scanning where barcodes are within arm's reach. It reads a standard 13 mil retail barcode from half a centimetre out to roughly 70cm. Zebra also builds extended-range and direct-part-marking versions of the DS8208 for specialist jobs.
Will it work with my POS software?
In keyboard (HID) mode it works with practically any POS, because the software simply sees typed characters. The things worth checking are whether your POS expects a particular suffix such as Enter or Tab after the barcode, and whether it needs a specific scanner mode. Both are set by scanning configuration barcodes. Call us on 1300 115 808 if you want it pre-configured for your system before it ships.
How tough is it really?
Zebra rates it for 54 drops onto concrete from 1.8m and 2,000 tumbles from 0.5m, with an IP52 seal against dust and light splashes. In practice that means an accidental drop from counter height is not the end of the scanner, which is the main reason busy sites choose this tier over an entry-level unit.
