The Nexa ZED 2603 is a corded handheld scanner for counters that cannot afford a second attempt at a barcode. Behind the window sits a 640 by 480 pixel CMOS imager running at sixty frames per second, lit by a white LED and aimed by a red one. Because it is a camera rather than a laser, there is no scan line to line up: the code can be rotated any way round, printed on a curved bottle, or glowing on a customer's phone, and the read still lands. Scan precision is rated to 3 mil on Code 128, which is the measure that separates an imager coping with small, dense or worn codes from one that stalls on them.
The hands free stand is supplied in the box rather than charged as an accessory. Seated in the cradle the ZED 2603 becomes a presentation scanner for grocery style lanes, lifted out it is an ordinary trigger gun for bulky stock and shelf work, and the changeover takes a second. Connection is by USB: out of the box it works as a USB-HID keyboard wedge, so the barcode is simply typed into your point of sale with no driver to install, and it can be switched to USB-VCP virtual COM for software that expects a serial port. The shell is ABS and PC rated to IP42 for everyday retail conditions, the scanner weighs 140 g, and the unit is covered by a 36 Months Return to Base warranty. Sold and supported in Australia by POS PLAZA on 1300 115 808.
Why choose the Nexa ZED 2603
Reads at 3 mil
A scan precision of 3 mil on Code 128 means the engine still resolves the tight, smudged and partly worn codes that stop a cheaper imager.
1D, 2D and QR
Twenty two linear symbologies and seven matrix formats, from EAN-13 and GS1 DataBar through to QR Code, Data Matrix and PDF417.
Phone screens
A CMOS imager reads a code straight off a lit display, which is what vouchers, loyalty passes and click and collect pickups now arrive on.
60 frames a second
The imager takes sixty looks at the code every second, so the read lands while the operator is still moving the item across the counter.
Plug in and go
USB keyboard wedge means the decoded barcode is typed straight into your POS with no driver to install, on Windows, macOS or Linux alike.
Stand in the box
The hands free stand is included rather than sold separately, so the same unit works as a trigger scanner and a presentation scanner.
Where it fits
Grocery and convenience
Fast repeat scanning at a staffed lane, where the stand lets an operator leave the scanner sitting and simply pass stock across it.
Pharmacy and library
Script boxes, member cards and loan barcodes, including the small dense codes printed on medicine packaging and on book spine labels.
Warehouse counters and trade desks
Goods in, pick confirmation and order dispatch at a fixed counter, where an IP42 shell and a 300 mm working range cover the job.

Before you order
Check the host port
This is the USB build and it needs a free USB port. There is no RS-232 serial connection on this part number, so call us on 1300 115 808 if your till only offers a 9 pin serial port.
Check the counter depth
The stand measures 145 x 68 x 169 mm and the scanner sits above it, so allow roughly 25 cm of height clear of overhead shelving at the scan position.
Check the environment
IP42 suits a counter, a dispensary or an office. A washdown area, a cold store or a site with regular drops onto concrete needs a rugged scanner instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the stand come with the scanner?
Yes. The ZED 2603 is supplied with its hands free stand, with part number ZED2603USBB covering both pieces. Drop the scanner into the cradle and it reads whatever you present to it, lift it out and it works as an ordinary trigger scanner. There is nothing extra to buy to get presentation scanning.
Will it read a barcode off a customer's phone?
Yes. The imaging engine is a CMOS camera rather than a laser, and a camera can resolve a code rendered on a backlit screen. That covers emailed vouchers, loyalty passes, membership codes and click and collect pickup codes.
What does a 3 mil scan precision actually buy me?
Mil is the width of the narrowest bar in a barcode, measured in thousandths of an inch. A 3 mil rating on Code 128 means the engine can still separate bars that fine, so it copes with the small dense codes on pharmaceutical packaging, electronic components and jewellery tags, and with printed codes that have worn or smudged.
How far from the scanner can the barcode be?
The brochure quotes a depth of field of 60 mm to 300 mm on a 13 mil Code 39 symbol. In practice that is a comfortable hand's span of working distance, which suits counter work and goods in scanning. Very wide or very low contrast codes will sit at the shorter end of that range.
Which USB mode should I choose, USB-HID or USB-VCP?
USB-HID makes the scanner behave like a keyboard, so the decoded barcode is typed into whatever field has focus and no driver is needed. That is the right choice for most point of sale software and it is how the scanner arrives. USB-VCP presents a virtual COM port over the same USB cable, which some warehouse and bespoke applications expect. The mode is selected by scanning a configuration barcode from the manual. This part number is the USB build: it does not have an RS-232 serial connection.
Is IP42 enough protection for my site?
IP42 means the shell keeps out solid objects larger than 1 mm and resists water dripping at up to 15 degrees from vertical. That is an everyday retail and office rating: a counter, a dispensary, a service desk. It is not a washdown or a cold store rating, and it is not built for a site where the scanner is regularly dropped onto concrete. For those, ask us about a rugged model.
Can I use it with my POS software?
In keyboard wedge mode almost certainly, because the scanner simply types what it reads. Some platforms publish a supported hardware list or expect a particular prefix or suffix on the scanned data, which the ZED 2603 can be programmed to add. Call POS PLAZA on 1300 115 808 with the name of your POS and we will confirm before you order.
What is covered by the warranty?
The ZED 2603 carries a 36 Months Return to Base warranty. Return to base means the unit comes back to us for assessment and repair or replacement, rather than an engineer attending your site.
