Thermal Receipt Printers for Retail & Hospitality — No Ink, Fast & Quiet
Thermal receipt printers are the most widely used receipt printer type for retail checkouts, cafés, restaurants, and hospitality businesses. They print using heat rather than ink, which means no ink cartridges, no ribbons, and no running out mid-service. POS Plaza stocks a range of 80mm thermal receipt printers from Epson, Star Micronics, Bixolon, and Nexa, with USB, Ethernet, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi connection options.
How does a thermal receipt printer work?
Thermal printers use a heated print head to activate heat-sensitive coating on thermal paper. As the paper passes over the head, the coating darkens where heat is applied, forming the printed text and barcodes. No ink, no ribbon, no toner. The only consumable is the paper roll — and because there's nothing to run out of mid-print (aside from paper), thermal printers are extremely reliable for high-volume retail and hospitality environments.

- Bluetooth — connects wirelessly to an iPad, iPhone, or Android tablet. Ideal for Square or Shopify on iPad. Range approx. 10 metres.

What paper roll size do thermal receipt printers use?
Most counter thermal receipt printers use 80mm wide paper rolls (the most common standard is 80mm x 80mm). Some compact or older models use 58mm rolls. Always check your printer's specifications — using the wrong width can damage the print head. POS Plaza stocks thermal paper rolls in all standard sizes.
Frequently asked questions — thermal receipt printers
Q: Do thermal receipt printers need ink?
A: No. Thermal printers use heat to print on heat-sensitive paper. There are no ink cartridges, ribbons, or toner to replace. The only ongoing consumable is the thermal paper roll.
Q: How long do thermal receipts last?
A: Standard thermal paper receipts can fade within 2–5 years depending on storage conditions. Heat, sunlight, and humidity accelerate fading. For receipts that need long-term storage (tax records, warranties), BPA-free thermal paper lasts longer, or advise customers to photograph receipts.
Q: Can thermal printers be used in a kitchen?
A: Generally no. Commercial kitchen environments are hot, steamy, and greasy — conditions that cause thermal paper to fade or darken prematurely. For kitchen order printing, use an impact (dot matrix) printer such as the Epson TM-U220, which uses an ink ribbon and is unaffected by heat.
Q: Can a thermal receipt printer open a cash drawer?
A: Yes. Most thermal printers have an RJ11 cash drawer port. When the printer processes a sale, it sends a signal to pop the connected cash drawer open automatically.
Q: What print speed should I look for?
A: For a typical retail or café counter, 150–200mm/sec is sufficient. For high-volume environments such as busy restaurants or supermarkets, look for 250–300mm/sec models such as the Epson TM-T88VII.
